Asia-Pacific Student Entrepreneurship Society

Go Faster with ASES

Executive Team for 2010

President: Carlo Del Fabbro

I am an Economics/Marketing student with several years experience working in the IT industry for companies such as IBM and Bain & Co, both domestically and overseas.

My passions include entrepreneurship, business strategy and marketing, customer service, and technology. I'm currently teaching myself Ruby on Rails. I love running events (especially charitable ones) including the City 2 Surf, Balmoral Burn, Hope Street Run and Bay Run, mountain biking and rock climbing. Also I love to cook, and have a special place in my heart for good coffee!

I joined ASES with the goal of challenging myself to make a positive change, as well as to meet other motivated, inspirational people. I want to help ASES play a part in energising the young Australian entrepreneurship sector. Australian cities need to be on the global map as centres of innovation and creativity!

Vice President: Safwan Chowdhury

I am a Law/Applied Finance student with a very international background and a strong passion for entrepreneurship. I created two startups last semester including 'Myriad Apparel,' which wholesales custom print apparel.

I initially joined ASES because I believed that it's workshops and events would help me learn the skills that a successful entrepreneur would need. I later found out that these events also offer a great opportunity to meet like minded individuals, including Australia's top business people.

I look forward to working with the ASES Team to create a new generation of entrepreneurs this year.

International Operations Director: Tegan Shi

I am currently completing my final year for Master in International Relations/International Trade and Commerce Law at Macquarie University. What ASES attracts me is its focus on the business world outside our everyday student environment. It is a wonderful platform to build your social network, which involves similar minded people inside and outside the campus, to exchange their thoughts on innovation and entrepreneurial skills and experiences.

After becoming involved with ASES MQ, I discovered that individually, building the link between the academic and commercial world can be very challenging, and ASES has provided a perfect environment for this by hosting its annual Stanford summit and their global Chapter summit, where we are able to meet experts in various fields and delegates from around the world, creating relationships and opportunities for the present and the future.

Finance Director: Phoebe Zhang

I am currently in my 4th year of my Bachelor of Commerce-Accounting/Law degree with a relatively active personality. A friend first introduced me to ASES a few years back which was different to my other interests at the time. The society caught my attention because of what it stood for. Its primary purpose is to assist in culturing skills for students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs. However the range of seminars and workshops it offers is not specific to this purpose. ASES has taught me a lot in relations to my degree and enhanced my knowledge of the business sector.

This society continues to develop many useful skills that are applicable to whatever occupation I may decide to enter like networking, interview tips, marketing, event organisation, accountability and most importantly teamwork. Therefore ASES can cater to whatever career paths you decide take.

Programs Director: James Kim

I am a chemistry/environmental management student. But my passion extends beyond laboratories.

My goal is to start a company that replace existing products (and/or method of production) to something that is more environmentally friendly and cost efficient.

I joined ASES because I come from a science background; opportunities to engage and learn about entrepreneurship and the business world don’t come often for me. I believe ASES will equip me with the set right skills to prepare me to be a successful entrepreneur.

My interests include BRIC and N-11. In my spare time, I enjoy music, art and fashion.

Public Relations Team:

Bodhi Dharmatilake

I'm an adventurous, moralistic and fun-loving person who strives to achieve as much as I can in life, while still enjoying it to its fullest.  ASES allows for individuals with different ideas to unite as one. It isn't constrained to simply one profession or expertise, rather it allows for creativity, and enhances one's degrees rather than burdening it.

To me ASES allows more free thinking and less structure, and makes a point that we can all venture down different paths, and not just stick to the heavily trodden one. ASES allows me to expand my horizons to more than just the desk job after my degree finishes. Additionally I get to meet wonderful people and participate in great events!!!

Josephine Kwok

I am a fourth year student studying Bachelor of Business Administration/Laws. My active participation in a wide range of Macquarie University student societies has allowed me to acquire various skills which I believe ASES will help me to refine and utilize.

The process and transformation of seeing innovative ideas grow with the nurturing care from an entrepreneurial mind into a success despite the odds is a very satisfying spectacle. ASES gives us the opportunity to see future pioneers and entrepreneurial giants take their first steps towards building their success.

I look forward to working with the diverse and talented ASES team to translate brilliant ideas into reality.

Marketing Director: Vianna Shing

I am currently studying Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) with Bachelor of Law. ASES achieves its vision: “ASES is a global community” through its summits every year. ASES summits allow individuals from different cultural backgrounds to interact and share their knowledge of entrepreneurship. I see this opportunity as a rewarding experience, as it allows me to experience cultural diversity and understand how business develops under customs of different countries. Travelling also broadens our horizons and supports self development.

The society offers a high degree of flexibility and creativity to its members. It is a platform which develops student’s leadership and entrepreneur skills through organising the society and summit activities.

Through ASES, I would also be able to meet new people and obtain contacts in the real industry. Networking is an important component in developing careers. Interacting with current members of the industry would offer further understanding of the actual business operation and the industry. Moreover, learning from one’s past experience would inspire me to prepare myself for the future.

HR Director: Josh Cass

I am a third year Human Resource Management student at Macquarie. I have had several HR related internships for companies such as CitiGroup and CSR Ltd.

For me, joining ASES was just another piece of the puzzle for developing personally and professionally. Through running events and networking with other like minded students, you learn a lot about yourself and where you would like your career to head. You also let key competencies prosper due to your involvement in social environments, such as communication and presentation ability.  I definitely recommend all Macquarie students to get involved with a student society or even join as a member to benefit from some of the great events throughout the university calendar.

IT Director: Gautam Arodi

I am an Applied Finance student with a strong multi-cultural background. With a passion for technology, I joined ASES to combine this passion with the ability to meet new free thinkers with different, equally strong passions.

ASES allows people with varied backgrounds both personally and academically to join together with one goal, being able to develop and spread creative ideas. By joining ASES, it has given me the opportunity and experience to do something different outside of traditional, academic means, as well as to meet and network with people working in the industry. This allows me to learn the different ideas people had, how they went about to implement them and what was accomplished when implemented.Hearing from people in the business, accomplished or otherwise, helps to give you key insight into the mindset of these individuals. ASES brings together a global community to help people with their ideas.

General Officers:

Aileen Lee

I am currently in my fourth year studying Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting)/Bachelor of Laws. I decided to become an active member of ASES because it supplements my degree by providing experience and opportunities that are not available as part of the standard university curriculum. This includes learning new skills like effective communication through various media, public speaking, logistics and budgeting for large events.

Being an active member of ASES can be challenging as it requires creativity, commitment and persistence, and to be honest, pushing yourself to be doing just that little bit extra. But every effort and contribution to an event is evident and the sense of accomplishment that follows is pretty much invaluable.

Part of the beauty of ASES is that it is a collection of like-minded people from different backgrounds and fields of study with unique ideas of their own for the future. It’s quite amazing how, collectively, we can provide each other with the skills required to realise those ideals, no matter how diverse they may be.

Anthony Chan

Hi guys! I am a 3rd year Marketing/Law student, always striving for innovation, creativity and putting myself forward to take on any challenge which is put to me. That's what attracted me to ASES, it gives you the tools to place you in that mindset, to go for things and to imbue you with the confidence to put your best foot forward. The great thing about the ASES way of life is that it isn't confined to a degree, ASES's application has no boundaries, its a way of life that needs to be adopted by many more students!

When I'm not being innovative and creative, I am always looking for the ultimate scramble eggs recipe, I dabble in hip hop dance and I play jazz flute. I also enjoy tacos.

Ashley Lai

I am currently studying Bachelor of Applied Finance with Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting). My initial interest in participating in ASES came about in my first semester of Uni during O-Week. When I approached the ASES stall I came to meet team members who were motivated and enthused about entrepreneurship.

I ended up joining ASES because of the endless opportunities it provided me such as the wide range of skills that has boosted my confidence and also the opportunity to network with like-minded students not only through ASES-Australia but throughout the Asia-Pacific region as well. My personal interests include playing the piano, travelling and pilates.

Sophie Ngoeun

I am currently in the fourth year of an Accounting/Laws degree, who joined ASES on the recommendation of a friend as I was seeking a challenging extra-curricular activity. I was keen to be part of the ASES team as I wanted to be part of a society that had clear goals and a stable, committed team.

From my experience at ASES, I have learnt various practical skills that are not taught in your typical university subjects and met many people with similar entrepreneurial ambitions and ideas.

Outside work and uni, I enjoy watching TV series, reading novels and discussing particularly morbid topics with my friends.
